What is Assisted Living, and how does it differ from Frail Care?
Assisted Living is designed for individuals who are still relatively independent but need support with daily tasks.
Up to now you have been totally independent, living on your own, but in recent times it has become apparent that household chores, meal preparations, routine maintenance tasks, remembering certain things, driving to the shops and dealing with any medical emergency, is a real problem.
That is what the Assisted Living service is designed for. Residents live in their own apartments but have access to assistance whenever they need it.
On the other hand, Frail Care is meant for individuals who require constant medical supervision or are unable to perform most daily tasks on their own.
In Frail Care, nursing staff are available around the clock to provide more intensive support, including help with mobility, feeding, and managing chronic health conditions.
What kind of services can I expect from Assisted Living?
In an Assisted Living facility, you will receive help with tasks that they might struggle with or make life a bit easier, such as meals, medicine management, medical emergencies, transport, security, housekeeping, and ad hoc medical checkups.
How does Frail Care provide a higher level of support?
Frail Care is much more hands-on than Assisted Living. In addition to the services provided in Assisted Living, Frail Care offers:
Nurses and caregivers are available 24/7 to assist with all daily activities, including bathing, dressing, and feeding.
Ongoing medical care is provided for those with chronic illnesses, ensuring that health conditions are closely monitored.
Residents who have difficulty moving around are given full support, including help with getting in and out of bed, using the bathroom, and moving throughout the facility.
Services might include up to palliative or hospice services.
When should we consider transitioning from Assisted Living to Frail Care?
The decision to move from Assisted Living to Frail Care typically depends on changes in the residents’ health.
Signs that Frail Care might be more suitable include difficulty in performing basic tasks such as bathing, dressing or any form of incontinence, daily or regular medical attention due to chronic conditions that are irreversible, a significant decline in mobility or cognitive function and / or frequent falls or accidents.
Can a resident receive temporary assistance if they are not ready for Frail Care yet?
Yes. Assisted Living offers temporary daily support for residents who might need extra help due to short-term health conditions like surgery recovery or illness. This includes help with showering, dressing, incontinence care, and meal delivery.
However, this support is typically limited to a couple of days or even a few weeks, depending on the condition but assistance beyond that, may require a move to Frail Care.
How do social activities differ between Assisted Living and Frail Care?
In Assisted Living, residents can take part in a variety of social activities designed to keep them engaged and active, such as exercise classes, social or religious events, or group outings.
Socialisation is a key part of life in Assisted Living, helping residents maintain their mental and emotional well-being.
In Frail Care, activities are focused on individual needs, as many residents require more rest or have mobility issues that prevent them from participating in group activities.
How do costs compare between Assisted Living and Frail Care?
Assisted Living is generally more affordable than Frail Care, as it offers a lower level of supervision and medical support. However, the costs of Assisted Living can vary depending on the services and amenities offered.
